Rumi refers to human breath as being the same breath that Christ breathed into a dead person to bring him back life. It is like the spirit circles within us igniting the power of love that was always meant to be ours when we were created. We catch the air of Christ, and we breathe it in, and we let it circulate and mix with our own, and then we breathe it out. We have been created with the same great nature that was flowing through those who were called out to lead as far back as Abraham. All it takes is to truly believe in a love that places this faith in us.
Rumi tells us to walk shoulder to shoulder with such greats as Solomon, Moses, Joseph, and Abraham. Destroy the army of the stars, ride the sun, and flow with the fire and the movement of the sun. Flow in the divine mission that created this universe!
This is about a love calling us out to become the best we can be and to let the divine power do the rest. Our thoughts manifest as the world around us and in what we become. If we could breathe the breath of Christ and have the faith to walk through the flames to let our heart lead us, our calling in this life would find us and make itself known! What would it be like to spend our life on a mission of greatness like Moses, Abraham, or Solomon? Rumi’s message is proclaiming that it is possible if we could only believe it. Here is a test of faith that offers great hope for anyone who might dare to step from their dreams into the reality of a great love.
Rumi’s message is reverberating through the centuries to tell us to realize that as human beings, we are the light of the chosen one, the pinnacle of creation, and we need to believe it to benefit from all the possibilities that surround us.
Divan of Shams – Poem No. 2840
Don’t make an idol out of the destitute,
for you are our very special one.
Don’t sell your self for too little,
for you are worth more than life.
Raise your staff to depart the sea,
for you are the Moses of time.
Split apart the face of the moon,
for you are the light of the Chosen One.
Break the urn of earthly goods,
for you are the Joseph of grace.
Breathe out like Christ,
for you are the breath of life.
Face the army of the enemy alone,
for you are the champion of times.
Break down the door to your treasures,
for you are the Pinnacle of Belief.
Take the ring from the Demon,
for you have the power of Solomon.
Shine beyond the gathering of the stars,
for you have the brilliance of the sun!
Step inside the fire like Abraham,
for you are the joyful innocent.
Drink the water of existence,
for you are the Khedr of eternal life.
Move away from nonbelievers,
for you flow from the essence of Purity.
Don’t listen to foolish deception,
for you are the summit of greatness.
Your soul is immortal.
You are overflowing with ideas.
You belong to the Glorious One.
You have arrived as a ray of God.
You are what is yet to be created.
You have seen nothing of your self?
Rise just like the sun at dawn
and give birth to your Self!
What a shame you remain unseen!
Don’t hide in the clouds like the moon!
Drop your robes of disguise,
and reveal the splendor of your glory.
No mine has a ruby like you!
No world has a life like you,
for this is the diminishing world,
and you are the expanding soul.
You are the sword of the Lion of God,
and your body is like a sheath.
If the sheath breaks apart,
it should not break your heart.
Your soul is a falcon with tied feet.
Your body is the anchoring stone.
Use your claws to untie your feet,
and soar beyond all limits.
See how radiant pure gold becomes
when it enters the fire!
The precious nature of it is revealed
as the brilliance emerges in the flames.
O dear one, don’t run away
from the heat of the fire!
What would happen if you risk it all
and take one step into the flame?
I swear to God it will not burn you.
Your face will glow like gold.
For you are descended from Abraham,
and you carry his mantle of faith.
Break out from beneath the earth
and rise above the tallest tree!
Soar to the summit of nearness,
for you are the noble falcon of the King.
Come out from inside the sheath,
for you are the tempered sword!
Come out of the darkened mine.
You are the ever-flowing fortune!
Spread the sweetness of your heart,
for you are a cane filled with sugar.
Play a glorious song,
for you are the reed flute of God.
